5. Tips for better results

Even though the human eye can easily see objects in an image and as humans we can manipulate them in our mind, this task is extremely complex for a computer. The following tips will make it easier for the software to understand what you want and help you obtain better results.

  • Provide as much information about the foreground (object) and the background as possible. In other words, when you draw the original mask, be as precise as possible on the edges. Not only will the processing be faster, but it will also yield better results. It is a tradeoff between the time you are willing to spend drawing the contour and the quality you want.

  • If part of the result image is wrong, go back to your mask and refine it around that specific area. It is a good idea to first draw a rough contour of your object, inspect the result and then go back to correct the problematic area.

  • Increase the matte contrast. Sometimes, Decompose will be confused. It will draw part of the object slightly translucent or make chunks of the background slightly visible. You can correct this with the "alpha" slider. When the alpha slider is to the maximum, there will be virtually no translucency - everything will be either opaque or transparent. Increasing the gamma a little bit is usually a good idea.

  • Make sure you did not include foreground pixels in the background or vice-versa. Decompose will trust whatever information you provide. If you enter incorrect information, it will become confused and yield weird results.
