1. Overview

The following describes how DVDRemaster can be used to copy a DVD. We will cover the following topics:

  • Importing a DVD:
We recommend copying the content of the source DVD on your hard disk before recompression for two reasons:
    • The content of the DVD might be encrypted and need to be decrypted before DVDRemaster can process the video.
    • DVDRemaster will perform two passes on the data. Since DVD drives are slower than hard drives, using a local copy will make the process faster.
  • Recompressing the Video:
Once the DVD has been copied locally, use DVDRemaster to recompress the video and select the content you would like to keep such that the resultant DVD fits on a DVD-R.
  • Burning to a DVD-R
The last step consists of burning the recompressed DVD with a DVD burner. This part explains how this can be done using Roxio Toast 5, Roxio Toast 6, and DVD Imager (freeware).

1.1 Requirements

Before we start, make sure you have the following:

You should have enough disk space to store the original DVD and the recompressed DVD. For example, if the original DVD is 8GB and you will recompress to about 4.5GB, you will need at least 12.5GB of disk space. If you use DVD Imager to burn your DVD, it will make another copy of the DVD, requiring in our example, another 4.5GB. However, at this point, you can remove the original DVD from your disk, freeing (in our example) 8GB.

Enough talk! Let's get started!
